OSHKOSH, WI (WTAQ) — Wisconsin Republican US Senator Ron Johnson says that it is indeed appropriate for the senate to vote on a new Supreme Court justice to replace the late Ruth Bader Ginsberg.
Johnson spoke to the media on Wednesday after a reporter asked if it’s hypocritical given the Republican senate refused to vote on Merrick Garland, who was appointed by former President Barack Obama, during the 2016 election year following the death of Justice Antonin Scalia. He argued that because the legislature and the presidency were controlled by different parties at the time, the current situation is different.
“You had divided government…now in 2020 you have unified government,” Johnson said. “The voters spoke loud and clear in 2016 and then again in 2020 as to who should be in charge of this process.”
“In 2016, all we were saying is that we wanted the American people to break the tie,” said Johnson. “And they did, they elected President [Donald] Trump.”
President Trump is expected to nominate a judge over the weekend to replace Ginsberg, who died last Friday.
