MADISON, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – The number of COVID-19 hospitalizations reached an all-time high in Wisconsin on Tuesday.
Hospitals said they were treating 474 patients with positive coronavirus tests, 41 more than on Monday and 131 more than a week earlier. The number surpassed the previous record of 446 on April 9.
The number of patients in intensive care remained below record levels, however. Hospitals said 134 patients we in ICUs. While that was three more than on Monday and 39 more than a week earlier, it was fewer than the 196 on April 9.
New confirmed coronavirus cases and the percentage of positive tests came in below seven-day averages on Tuesday, while the number of new deaths was above the rolling average.
The state Department of Health Services reported 1,672 new cases out of 12,537 total tests, or 13.3% positive. Those numbers compare to seven-day averages of 1,838 cases and 16.7% positive.
Seven more people died, compared to an average of four per day over the past week.
Since the pandemic began, there have been 104,170 confirmed cases of COVID-19, the illness caused by the new coronavirus, and more than 1.3 million negative tests. A total of 1,251 people have died. DHS considers 88,131 people to have recovered from COVID-19.
