Graysen Garfield was the last one to go into the auction ring with his pig at the Southwest Livestock Show in Utah this past weekend. While most of the pigs were selling for about $1,000…he had no idea how much his pig was about to get. Garfield initially sold his pig for $2,600 in memory of the late Chad Reid. Reid was a former Utah State University Extension County Ag Director and also he helped out with a lot of 4-H programs. He sadly passed away in 2019 losing his battle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), better known as Lou Gehrig’s disease.
The story doesn’t stop there, the person who ended up buying Garfield’s pig told the auctioneer to put the pig back up for auction and sell it again. This went on over a dozen times and each time that someone bought the pig, it sold for around $2,000! All together with the silent donations that were also happening in the background, the pig brought in over $42,000. All of the money raised will be going to help give college scholarships to 4-H and FFA members in Chad Reid’s name.
Last year at this show, KUTV 2 reported that the grand champion steer raised $21,000 and all of the money went to help pay Reid’s medical bills. It’s awesome to see a community come together to help those in need.
