KEWASKUM, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – State officials unveiled the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial Highway signs in Washington County Thursday.
Legislation signed last year by Gov. Tony Evers, turned State Highway 28 from Highway 144 in the town of Farmington, to I-41, into Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial Highway.
The signs along US-45 and State Highway 28 will be installed in September by Washington County, while the signs along I-41 are expected to be installed next year.
The signs are in conjunction with the Wisconsin 9/11 Memorial and Education Center being built in Kewaskum.
The memorial honors the victims and rescue crews of the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks — including St. Norbert College graduate, Andrea Lyn Haberman, of Farmington.
Haberman was in New York on a business trip, working on the 92nd floor of the World Trade Center that day.
The idea to build the center came from Andrea’s parents, Gordon and Kathy Haberman.
The center, which is under construction, includes a beam of steel recovered from the north tower of the World Trade Center.
Officials say the memorial has nearly raised all the funds necessary to complete all four planned phases and is ahead of schedule.
