The first deer with Chronic Wasting Disease in the state were discovered in 2002 and now it’s been an issue in some counties. That’s why natural resources officials are asking hunters to test their deer for the disease. Deer that get harvested in Buffalo, Chippewa, Dunn, Eau Claire, Pepin, and Trempealeau counties should be tested before consuming.
CWD’s a disease that can impact the nervous system of deer, elk, and moose in the state. The reason they encourage hunters to get their animals tested prior to eating is because CWD’s caused by a protein called prion, which doesn’t go away even when venison’s cooked. The Wisconsin DNR says the results from testing should be available within two weeks of submitting the sample. You can find a sampling site near you right here.
