LA CROSSE, WI (WTAQ-WLUK) – UW-La Crosse has extended the shelter in place order to all residence halls until Sunday, September 27.
The school cites growing cases of COVID-19 on and off campus as the reason for the decision.
The shelter in place starts at 5 p.m. Sunday, September 13.
Face coverings are required on all campus property whether indoors or outdoors, according to UW-La Crosse.
UW-La Crosse says students that will remain in the campus living halls must weigh their own risks, as the University may not have enough isolation space available.
Although the shelter in place can only be enforced on campus, the University is urging off-campus students to follow the measures put in place.
All in-person undergraduate classes are currently suspended until Wednesday, September 16, where they will then become remote.
UW-La Crosse has an anticipated date of Monday, September 28 for the return of in-person classes.
The University says there is no evidence of COVID-19 transmission through in-person classes, but made the decision to cancel in-person instruction out of an abundance of caution.
Joe Gow, the UW-La Crosse Chancellor, says that he shares the “disappointment and frustration of students, families, faculty and staff who had hoped we might enjoy the start to this fall semester together. To those of you who have been following our campus-wide health protocols, I thank you for your awareness and dedication to protecting our UW-La Crosse community. To everyone, please take steps to prevent the spread of COVID-19 on and off campus: monitor your symptoms daily, wear your face coverings, practice physical distancing, and limit any gatherings with others beyond your roommates or household. All of our actions matter.”
