Looking back at the beginning of 2020, we were pretty hopeful that market prices would go up and stay up…until COVID-19 hit. After everything shut down, some farmers had no choice but to destroy what they’ve grown because they had no one to sell it to. That’s also the same time that milk prices started dropping and farmers were feeling the financial pain of the shutdown. Bottom line is that farmers need help and there’s a fund that can do just that.
You may have already heard of the Harvest of Hope fund because it’s been around since 1986. The fund was started by the Madison Christian Community because they felt a need to help struggling farm families in Wisconsin. Before the virus, the fund would give up to $1,500 to farmers to help with feed costs, vet bills, planting supplies, or anything else that a farmer was in need of. Now after the virus got here, they’ve upped the dollar amount to $2,000 per farm family.
In the past 34 years the fund has given out 1,705 grants. That adds up to $1.14 million dollars that went straight to Wisconsin farmers! Even though the fund was created by the Madison Christian Community, that doesn’t mean you have to be religious or be a part of a church to apply for a grant. The Harvest of Hope just wants to keep agriculture alive and help out any farmer in the state who’s in need.
