(WHBL) – It’s never been a good idea to drive under the influence, and it’ll be an even worse choice as the eyes of the law focus on the issue. Sheboygan County Sheriff Cory Roeseler yesterday announced that his department will join the statewide “Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over” campaign beginning Friday and running through Labor Day.
Cascade Police Chief Jason Liermann added that “This is not about stopping or arresting motorists. This is about saving lives and preventing needless tragedies by encouraging drivers to be safe and responsible.”
Liermann noted that someone is injured or killed in an alcohol-related crash about every three hours in Wisconsin. That added up to over 6,000 alcohol-related crashes, nearly 3,000 injuries and 140 deaths in the state last year. Concern also abounds for drivers compromised by both legal and illegal drugs including prescription and over-the-counter medications.
The Drive Sober campaign will employ over 52-hundred officers trained to find and remove impaired drivers from the roadways, and 310 highly-trained Drug Recognition Experts – among the most in the nation.
Wisconsin’s DOT also has a website with more information about driving sober; visit zeroinwisconsin.gov for tips and to download a free Drive Sober mobile app.
