(WHBL) – Imagine giving every man, woman and child in the City of Sheboygan a speeding ticket. Then toss a few thousand to Sheboygan Falls. That’s how many speeding tickets were issued in Wisconsin last year – a total of over 156 thousand. The Wisconsin State Patrol has named speed-related laws the “Law of the Month” in hopes that you’ll pay better attention. The reason: last year alone, excessive speed was a factor in nearly 22 thousand crashes that resulted in around 8,400 injuries and 163 deaths.
Wisconsin State Patrol Captain Ryan Chaffee of the Northeast Region/Fond du Lac Post said their message is simple: “buckle up, phones down, slow down. We want everyone to reach their destinations safely.”
A safe trip might require going even slower than posted limits, since those assume ideal travel conditions. Weather and traffic volume can both demand lower speed, and state law requires that speeds be adjusted to what is “reasonable and prudent”, so even if you’re at the limit, you can be cited for driving “too fast for conditions”. So especially during August – watch your speed.
