SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – After the coronavirus pandemic forced over 10% of Sheboygan County to file for unemployment compensation, a robust demand for workers makes a full recovery a real possibility. That according to Sheboygan County Economic Development Corporation Executive Director Joe Sheehan.
The SCEDC points to the pre-pandemic jobs picture – 59,000 employed and around 3% unemployment – and over 3,000 positions waiting to be filled. That’s considered full employment by many economists. Enter the pandemic and its “Safer at Home” order that eventually forced 8,500 persons into unemployment, and the rate jumped to 14%. While that created distress and uncertainty for most, others like Kristen Young, Workforce Development Coordinator at Johnsonville, seized the opportunity to hire talent. Young said that they’ve posted over a dozen positions on their Jobs.Johnsonville.com website.
The SCEDC’s Sheehan acknowledges that many will fail to find jobs that compare to what was lost, but he points to the silver lining: Sheboygan County unemployment has already recovered to 7.9%, and if all of their 3,200 job postings are filled, we will be back to pre-pandemic, full employment.
