SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – The Sheboygan Area School District is still getting input from parents as it weighs options for opening school on September 1st, even as the past school year has yet to officially close for grads.
Earlier this month, the SASD Board decided that a graduation ceremony could not be held this Saturday, July 25th, and an announcement on plans for the next possible date – August 15th – will be announced on Saturday, August 1st. In a message to students and parents, Assistant Superintendent Jason Konrath said that it’s still hoped that a commencement in Vollrath Bowl can be held, but if that’s not feasible due to health concerns then a virtual ceremony will be held on Sunday, August 16th.
Even as the Sheboygan class of ‘20 awaits the decision on commencement plans, several options for the opening of the next school year remain under consideration. A survey conducted earlier this summer made it clear that parents prefer students to be back in school in some fashion when the new year begins September 1st.
Options being considered involve “Hybrid” designs that differ between 4K, Elementary, Middle and High School levels, and various “Cohort” designs, some of which keep groups together throughout the school year in order to minimize crossover between groups.
The Middle School Hybrid plan has half of students attending in person Mondays and Thursdays, the other half on Tuesdays and Fridays, with Wednesday a virtual day for all.
Because of the need to specialize coursework in High School, it was determined that a Cohort plan was unworkable, and other options are being weighed.
A final decision on plans will be made late this month, and those plans all depend on staying in Phase 2 of the Sheboygan County Safe Restart Plan. If we go back to Phase 1, then it’s back to all virtual for all students, just as was done to finish the last school year.
