MADISON, WI (WTAQ) — A rare inflammatory syndrome linked to COVID-19 in children has reared its head in Wisconsin.
It’s called Multisystem Inflammatory Syndrome in Children, or MIS-C.
“MIS-C. is a rare but serious condition where different parts of the body can become inflamed,” said Wisconsin Bureau of Infectious Diseases Dr. Ryan Westergaard during a Thursday press briefing. “Including the heart, lungs, kidneys, brain, skin and gastrointestinal organs.”
The inflammation can limit blood flow and damage internal organs. It’s been detected in six Wisconsin children since first being identified by doctors in April.
“It’s not known exactly what causes MIS-C, but it seems to be triggered by COVID-19 infection,” explained Westergaard.
While the disease is extremely rare, doctors say it can be extremely dangerous as well.
No one under the age of 20 has died of COVID-19 in the state of Wisconsin.
