SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – Over 100 people gathered in Sheboygan Thursday night for a peaceful protest hours after the officer involved shooting of Kevan Ruffan.
Sheboygan Police were called to reports of a domestic incident on 15th Street between Indiana Ave. and Illinois Ave. at 5:50 Thursday morning. Police Chief Chris Domagalski announced at an afternoon press conference that Ruffan had two dangerous weapons, and charged at the officer. The officer retreated, displayed his taser and ordered Ruffan to stop. Ruffan continued to chase the officer, forcing him to transition to his firearm, and shoot Ruffan. Ruffan died at the scene.
Demonstrators gathered in downtown Sheboygan, marching down Business Drive, up Pennsylvania Avenue, eventually arriving at the police station on North 25th. Many of the demonstrators laid on the ground, similar to the protests after the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis. They continued to march down to the site where Ruffan had been shot that morning, and then dispersed for the night.
The officer involved in the shooting has been with the Sheboygan Police Department for 2 ½ years and has been placed on Administrative Leave.
More information will come from the Department of Justice, as they’ve taken over the investigation.
