SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – The Sheboygan County Sheriff’s Office took to their Facebook page this week to warn of a scam that, once again, is becoming very prolific across the country.
Called the “Grandparent Scam,” the potential victim receives a call or email from a con artist claiming to either be, or represent, a relative in distress. The scammer explains the relative is in trouble and needs grandparents to wire funds to be used for bail, lawyers fees, hospital bills or some other expense. Some artists are very good at impersonating a relative in trouble.
The Sheriff’s Office warns that phone calls with the scam can happen late at night to more easily confuse the victim. If you receive such a call or email, the Sheriff’s Office urges that you don’t respond, and to independently confirm any emergency with a relative before taking action.
