(WHBL) – Wisconsin 9th District Senator Devin LeMahieu of Oostburg delivered the GOP’s weekly radio address Thursday, defending peaceful protests but condemning the violence that broke out in riots earlier this week in Madison. Those riots resulting in breaking of windows, arson, and toppling statues. LeMahieu noted that the statues had nothing to do with recent unrest nationwide, one being an anti-slavery Civil War Hero, and the other used recently to celebrate the 100th anniversary of women’s suffrage. And, LeMahieu said, “Shockingly, my colleague, State Senator Tim Carpenter, was assaulted while taking a cellphone video of the lawlessness.”
LeMahieu also said that Governor Evers has the duty to protect the state capitol, and Madison’s mayor can’t be afraid to use police to protect people and property, noting that, “Peaceful protests are fundamental to our republic. But these violent riots cannot be tolerated.” And, “The time for excuses is over. Law enforcement needs to be allowed to preserve public safety, and the rioters responsible for this violence and destruction must be held accountable.”
