SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – Young people who borrow books from the Mead Public Library may no longer be subject to late fees. On Monday the library’s Finance Committee discussed waiving those fees for patrons under age 18.
Committee members were discussing how those fees affect an underserved population, and Board President Maeve Quinn noted that many were struggling under pressures associated with the pandemic. Though there were questions on how eliminating the fees would impact finances, board member and Alderperson Mary Lynne Donohue suggested that being more proactive with borrowers about late returns would be more beneficial than maintaining the fees.
The committee approved the motion to waive those fees for borrowers under 18. The full Board of Trustees is scheduled to take up the motion when it meets Thursday at 3pm.
