SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – Those hoping to catch a glimpse of big Lake Michigan waves amped up by the remains of Tropical Storm Cristobal are being advised by the National Weather Service to do that safely from on the shore today.
A Beach Hazard Statement covering the entire western shore for high waves and brisk currents was issued to warn people to stay out of the water from this afternoon through late evening.
The high swim risk will result from 7-10 foot waves as the remains of Cristobal lifts northward through Wisconsin later today – only the 4th tropical system on record to do so.
There’ll be no torrential rains here, and winds won’t be much worse than a strong spring storm, but they’ll be strong enough to create those big waves crashing onshore.
Coincidentally, this is also Beach Hazards and Water Safety Awareness Week in Wisconsin.
