(WHBL) – Sheboygan County is home to an estimated 15,000 deer according to the most recent data from the Wisconsin DNR. Many people like looking for them in state parks and fields, but many others will be seen on roadsides after a vehicle collision. Farmers hope to minimize crop damage from them, and hunters hope to bag one of the official State Wildlife Animals during the several hunting seasons. Managing the herd for all of those purposes and more is the job of the County Deer Advisory Council, and the DNR is looking for new members.
Kevin Wallenfang, DNR deer and elk ecologist, says that a great deal of stock is put into public involvement, and he hopes people will consider applying for a seat on their local council. Those selected will serve for three years helping manage deer in a way that’s best for their county.
If you’re interested, you’re invited to apply by visiting the Wisconsin DNR website and searching the keyword “CDAC”. Applications are due July 1st.
