(WHBL) – Buy Local, Buy Wisconsin. That’s the concept behind the grant from the Wisconsin Department of Ag, Trade and Consumer Protection that helps farms and businesses more efficiently process, market and distribute locally grown food products.
Salchert Meats of St. Cloud is one of 9 recipients across the state that will receive a share of $300,000 grant this year. The so-called BLBW program is a competitive grant designed to enable businesses to get more locally-grown products to consumers and, in turn, share their ideas and experience with others.
Salchert Meats began in the early 1900s as a family meat processor and market. It was returned to its family roots when Jeff and Katie Furhmann bought it in January last year. The Furhmanns will use the grant to establish an effective brand and brand strategy and an operational food safety program, and also develop a sales model that will be shared with other meat processors and markets.
