SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) – Saturday’s daily report from the Sheboygan County Division of Public Health paints a picture of slow change in numbers. The total number of confirmed cases has increased by only 2 since last Sunday, the most recent recorded yesterday. Of 843 persons tested, 46 have been confirmed positive for COVID-19. 33 additional persons were tested for the coronavirus; all came back negative. 7 cases are active as of Saturday – that’s two fewer than on Friday and this ups the recovered count to 37. State total positives jumped by over 300 for the second consecutive day. Saturday’s total was 5,687 compared to 5,356 on Friday. 57,138 negative results have been returned, resulting in just over 9% of tests returning positive. Hospitalizations in the state have involved 24% of the cases. Sheboygan County has no hospitalizations at this time.
Public Health urged the continuation practices outlined in Governor Evers’ “Safer at Home” initiative, noting that limiting physical contact between people is the best strategy to slow the spread of COVID-19.
The closure of non-essential businesses and other measures have resulted in major disruption of public and private economic sectors. On Friday it was announced that campus leaders of the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay would place 227 staff members on furlough, May 2nd through May 31st. All administrators with an annual salary above $100,000 are also taking a voluntary furlough.
Still, not all developments were negative. Today the City of Sheboygan announced the opening of the Vollrath Park disc golf course. Both Vollrath Park and Jaycee Park courses are now open – with the restriction that social distancing requirements be observed at all times unless the players reside in the same living unit or household. Public parks and open spaces may still be closed at the discretion of local health officials if the numbers of people or their actions make it necessary.
