SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) – County’s COVID-19 numbers took a jump up on Sunday. One case each in the 20-39 and 40-59 range, and two more between ages 60-79 were added for a total of 44 positive cases of the coronavirus that’s sweeping the globe. 15 cases are active, with 4 of those now hospitalized. Recoveries remain at 27, and negative test returns rose to 656. Statewide, COVID-19 has been detected in 4346 individuals.
Sheboygan County officials, in the Sunday update from the Division of Public Health, said that the key to controlling the virus is by adhering to rules imposed under Governor Evers’ “Safer at Home” emergency order, which has now been extended to 8 AM May 26th, unless superseded by a new order.
That extension has prompted sharp disagreement, especially from Republicans in Madison who plan to take action to at least modify the rules. However, the County DPH daily message reiterated that if restrictions are lifted too soon, then we risk a second wave of the coronavirus and that could threaten to overwhelm our healthcare system. They stated that more testing and more robust health measures must be in place before lifting the restrictions. This would enable building our capacity through buying needed medical supplies, finding more health care professionals, and ensuring adequate hospital beds to handle any resurgence.
