UNDATED (WHBL) – Just like the virus, scams centering on the COVID-19 Pandemic are spreading, and the Better Business Bureau of Wisconsin is warning to be wary of them.
One scam arrives as a text that looks like it came from the government, sometimes from the US Department of Health, claiming that you must take a “mandatory online COVID-19 test”, and gives a link to a website. In fact, the website will steal personal information and could put malware on your device. If you get one, don’t click anything and delete the message.
Another scam is targeting at-home workers. The BBB’s scam tracker received a report of a victim losing nearly $250 to a tech support scam using a pop-up window that appeared when the computer froze. Another scam imitates emails from the boss that convince unwitting employees to take steps that can compromise data or cost money. The Better Business Bureau urges employers to have clear IT policies in place, and that workers first verify emails before taking any action.
