SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) – When you ride the bus today, you’ll hopefully notice something different. One seat on each Shoreline Metro bus will be reserved in memory and honor of Rosa Parks as part of Black History Month.
Director of Transit & Parking for the City of Sheboygan Derek Muench called Rosa Parks an “icon, a hero, and a woman who stood up for what she believed in.” On December 1st, 1955 in Montgomery, Alabama, Rosa Parks refused to give up her “blacks only” bus seat when the “whites only” section was filled, violating Alabama’s segregation laws and by many measures starting the US Civil Rights Movement.
Today, each reserved Shoreline Metro seat will have a sign with biographical information, a link to additional resources at the Mead Public Library, and a rose in Parks’ honor. Riders are asked to respect the reservation in honor of Parks and to reflect on her contributions to American history.
