Leila A. Haas Spieker (nee Borkenhagen), age 100, of
Plymouth, passed away on (Wednesday, April 18, 2018) at Terrace Place in
Sheboygan.
She was born in Kiel, WI, on July 18, 1917, daughter of the
late Ernst and Lilly (Pingel) Borkenhagen.
Leila attended grade school at St. John Lutheran School in
Plymouth. Following school she worked at
Lakeshire Cheese Co.
On April 18, 1936, she married Alfred R. Haas at St. John
Lutheran Church in Plymouth. Following
their marriage they lived in Sheboygan, Weeden Station, Hulls Crossing,
Plymouth, and in Sheboygan again. Alfred
preceded her in death on Dec. 6, 1967.
On November 14, 1969, she married Emil R. Spieker at Good
Shepherd Lutheran Church in Sheboygan.
They resided in Waldo following their marriage. Emil preceded her in death on Dec. 28,
1993. Leila moved to Plymouth where she
has resided since Emil’s passing.
She worked as a seamstress at Lakeland Manufacturing in
Sheboygan for 32 years until her retirement.
After retiring, she enjoyed many years of golfing and even
had a hole-in-one. She also loved
playing cards and belonged to many bridge and sheepshead groups, sometimes
playing 2 or 3 times a day.
She also enjoyed going to her son’s home in Neenah, and also
to Hawaii to visit her son Merlin’s family there. Leila was definitely one who was always
smiling and enjoyed her life to the fullest.
She is survived by: One son: David J. Haas of Neenah; One
grandson: Richard (Lei) Haas of Kailua, Hawaii; Five great-grandchildren:
Justin Borges-Akua and Davis Haas both of Kailua, Jean (Charles) Flunker of
Waldo, Robert (Donna) Cotter of Madison, and Ann Cotter of Waldo; and Four
great-great-grandchildren: Richard Flunker and Beth Luebtke of Waldo, and
Christopher and Shean Cotter of Madison.
Leila was preceded in death by: Her two husbands; Parents;
Son: Merlin Harvey Haas; Daughter-in-law: Theresa; Grandson: Danny Flunker;
Three sisters: Verna Horn, Linda Gardener, and Hilda Frantz; and Brother:
Harvey Borkenhagen.
Following Leila’s wishes, cremation has taken place.
Memorial services will be held on Saturday (May 5, 2018) at
11:00 A.M. at St. John Lutheran Church in Plymouth. Rev. Nathan Meador, Pastor of the Church,
will officiate. Inurnment will be in
Greenlawn Memorial Park in the Town of Sheboygan.
Visitation will take place at CHURCH on Saturday (May 5) from
10:00 A.M. until the time of services.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in
Leila’s name for St. John Lutheran School.
