Sheboygan County approves emergency radio payment plan

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Sheboygan County has finalized their plan on how to pay for new emergency radios.  The county board voted Tuesday evening 17-5-1, approving how they will finance this equipment transition.

A last minute amendment from Supervisor Richard Bemis changed the plan so that the county fully covers all costs for volunteer fire and EMS groups.  This will increase the county’s cost by around $750,000. That amendment passed 13-9-1.

Originally the county wanted to split the cost for the radios 50/50 between local groups.  Some groups, mostly volunteer fire departments, voiced opposition to this plan saying that cost was too much for them to handle and wanted more county assistance.  This led to county committees approving a 70/30 split; the county paying the larger share and the rest by the local law enforcement, fire and EMS groups.

This is the first radio upgrade for the county since the early 2000s.  Back then the county paid the full costs for all the equipment in the county.
