BLS report shows Wisconsin ranks 35th in private sector job growth

WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - The number of private sector jobs in Wisconsin grew by 1.2 percent during the year ending in September.

That's the 35th slowest job growth among the 50 states.

The U.S. Labor Department released the figures Wednesday in its Quarterly Census of Employment and Wages. The report showed that Wisconsin added just over 28,350 private sector jobs from September of 2012 through September of '13.

Economists and Republican Governor Scott Walker have pointed to the census as the most accurate reflection of job numbers and trends. Walker's office recently said that over 106,000 private sector jobs were created in the first three years of the governor's term.

Walker promised before he was first elected that he would create a quarter-million jobs in his four-year term, to the start of 2015.

A recent Marquette poll showed that most Walker supporters would forgive him for that pledge.

Wednesday's report shows that construction jobs have grown faster than the total, at a rate of 5.6 percent. Manufacturing, the state's largest employment sector, continues to struggle with a growth rate of just 0.2 percent.
