RACINE COUNTY, WI (WTAQ) - Kathleen Vinehout -- a state senator and possible candidate for governor -- was not wearing a required seat belt in a traffic crash last month.

The Wisconsin State Journal quotes a State Patrol report as saying that Vinehout was in the back seat of her vehicle when it crashed on Interstate 94 December 8th in Racine County. It was caused by pileups during a snowstorm, while the Democrat from Alma was going around the state to test the viability of a race for governor.

She underwent eight hours of surgery on a shattered upper-right arm bone. Her husband said Vinehout was doing paperwork in the back seat at the time. She continues to recover at home.

Two campaign volunteers were in the front seat. Both were buckled up. Vinehout was not ticketed.

She's been considering a primary bid against the only other Democrat in the race, former state Commerce Secretary and Trek Bicycle executive Mary Burke.

Vinehout ran unsuccessfully for governor in the 2012 recall contest against Scott Walker.
