Serious crime in Sheboygan down last year

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Serious crime in the city of Sheboygan last year declined by 18 percent and, if you go back 5 years, it is down by 30 percent.

Police Chief Chris Domagalski attributes the decline to a number of factors, including police recognizing that crime isn’t random, but rather a recognition of where crimes occur more often and who commits them.  Domagalski said police have also concentrated on building relationships as they investigate crime to help police in obtaining useful information about crime.

The police department’s annual report shows only one murder last year compared to 3 in 2012.   Robberies were down from 21 to 7.  There were 187 burglaries reported last year, 73 fewer than the year before -  a 30 year low.   Domagalski says there is still room for improvement, as over half of the burglaries are residential in nature and, of those, over 60 percent of those residences are unlocked.  And he said 93 percent of vehicle entries occurred because of unlocked vehicles.
