Nearly 200 new problem waterways to be added to DNR list under Clean Water Act

MADISON, Wis. (WSAU) -- The Department of Natural Resources is taking a look at water quality across the state.

The DNR updates their list of problem rivers and lakes every two years for the Clean Water Act, and this year's proposal would add add nearly 200 new waterways to the list. The primary concern from the DNR is excess phosphorus which cause rapid algae and weed growth, but also bacterial contaminants, mercury, excessive biological sediment and other industrial pollutants.

A number of area waterways are already on that list including the Big Eau Pleine, parts of the Wisconsin River, and Lake Nokomis. Up for addition are Lake DuBay and Little Bear Creek in Wood County.

The new listings are going up for public comment starting online tomorrow and running through March 6th. All comments collected will be sent to the EPA along with the DNR's proposal.
