Council Rejects Referendum on City Attorney

SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - The Sheboygan City Council Monday night rejected a resolution to put the question of having the City Attorney appointed - rather than elected - to a referendum, but that doesn’t mean there won’t be a referendum.  Council President Don Hammond said it's a decision the council should have made on its own, and then let the people decide if it's important enough to petition for a binding referendum, rather than putting it directly to the people because the council didn't want to do its job.  He said now the council will have to determine if they want to take up a resolution on making the position appointive.  Hammond said if that happens and is approved, then the people will have time to petition for the referendum.  But now, Hammond said, the time-frame for getting the question on the November ballot is much tighter.  City Attorney Steve McLean has said he will be retiring when his current term ends next April, so the issue must be finalized by December when candidates take out papers for the April election.
