Emerald Ash Borer found in Sheboygan County

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) - The Emerald Ash Borer has been found in Sheboygan County.  Bill McNee, the DNR’s Forest Health Specialist in Plymouth, said the insect was spotted in two traps in Random Lake and the Town of Holland late last month.  He adds it’s likely the bug may be elsewhere in the county, so everyone in the county with ash trees should be checking them to make sure they are not infected.

McNee said he expected the bug to be found in the county at some point once it was first spotted in the state in 2008.  Last year the bug was found at Harrington Beach State Park near Belgium, so it was no surprise it was found where it was this year in the county.

With the bug now found in the county, McNee says those who have ash trees needs to take action now to protect them with insecticides.  If no action is taken, those trees will get infected and be killed.  For those who have a forest of ash trees, you can contact him or any other forester for assistance on what to do.

Due to the fact the borer has been found in other nearby counties in the past, Sheboygan County has been under a firewood transport ban since 2008.

More information on the insect can be found online at dnr.wi.gov.
