SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Wisconsin’s Attorney General J.B. Van Hollen spoke at King Park Pavilion in Sheboygan Thursday morning to announce the unveiling of a new statewide campaign to combat a growing heroin problem in the state.

Van Hollen claims heroin has grown in the state due to recent efforts to combat prescription drug abuse in teens and young adults.  As a result of limiting access and rising costs to get perscription drugs with opiates, heroin became a more readily available and cheaper option for those who needed to soothe their cravings.

The new campaign will include using state funds to provide grants to law enforcement agencies and community groups to find new and successful ways to combat this problem.  One recent grant went to the Sheboygan Police Department, which Chief Chris Domagalski said is currently being used to fund a community survey.  Results from the survey will help establish bench marks regarding public awareness of heroin and what educaton efforts can be done.

Other campaigns goal is to increase public awareness of the heroin problem with the use of advertising, posters, and a website; theflyeffect.com.
