SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - If you’ve been wondering about the orange cones you may be seeing around some schools in the city of Sheboygan, it’s part of an effort being called “traffic calming." Aaron Brault, Director of the Sheboygan County Planning and Conservation Department, said the project is in preparation of the non-motorized program and is aimed at reducing motorists speed and improving safety around Sheboygan’s 12 schools and the YMCA. The project, which is totally funded by the Non-motorized Program, will eventually include installation of curb bumpouts, refuge islands, solar powered radar signs, raised crosswalks, a traffic circle, and crosswalk lighting. The cones you may have seen are part of a temporary traffic calming measure. The plan will be fully implemented next year. The next trial area is near Jefferson School on Superior Avenue, which will begin next week and last for a week or two.
