WASHINGTON D.C. (WTAQ) - U.S. Senate Republican Ron Johnson says he'll do all he can to avoid another federal government shutdown -- but it won't be easy.
Johnson is one of three Capitol Hill lawmakers from Wisconsin serving on a special conference committee that's supposed to come up with a budget compromise by December 13th.
Senate Democrat Tammy Baldwin and House GOP Budget chairman Paul Ryan of Janesville are the other panel members. Ryan is one of the new committee's co-chairs.
Johnson says the two parties cannot agree on the size of the problem they face -- but he still hopes both sides can work together and strike a deal.
The government has borrowed enough money to keep running through mid-January.
It will hit the debt ceiling by February 7th unless the borrowing limits are raised, or major spending cuts are made.
