Forest County off-road recreational park proposal could be economic boost

CRANDON, Wis. (WXPR) - A nonprofit group is working to build a 10-thousand acre off-road vehicle park in Forest County. The group says it would have a 28-million dollar annual impact.

President of Wisconsin Off-Road Vehicle Park Incorporated John Schnorr says it would meet a sizable demand for off-road recreation. And he notes the park would be open year-round. "This is much more than just a park for ATV riding. This would be an all-inclusive venue which would include jeeps, trucks, motorcycles. But it would also serve as a venue for silent sportspeople: hunters, fishermen, backpackers, cross country skiing."

The nonprofit is in the process of funding the multimillion dollar project, and pinning down the exact location. Schnorr says the group has narrowed down the options and is staying away from sensitive cultural or environmental sites. "We identified wetlands and agricultural lands and stayed away from areas like that, so that we wouldn't interfere for instance livestock grazing, or contamination of the watershed."

Schnorr says a recent presentation in Madison was well received by local lawmakers. The group is continuing to pitch the idea to local stakeholders.
