Opening weekend deer harvest down in area, state

SHEBOYGAN COUNTY, WI (WHBL) - The weather may be to blame for a drop in the number of deer taken locally and around the state during the opening weekend of this year’s gun deer season.

According to preliminary figures released by the DNR, Sheboygan County recorded 576 deer harvested.  That is down 180 from last year’s opening weekend, a drop of 24-percent.  For the entire state, the number of deer harvested is down nearly 18-percent at over 110-thousand.

DNR officials blame one of the coldest opening weekends ever for the low numbers.  They add the state did have an increase in the number of licenses issued from last year of just under one percent.
