Appeals court turns down request for stay in new John Doe probe

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - Wisconsin's Fourth District Court of Appeals denied a request to stop a John Doe investigation reported involving Governor Scott Walker's campaign and conservative groups.

Two attorneys filed motions with the state appeals court this week on behalf of three unnamed petitioners looking to halt the secret probe.

The AP reports the court rejected the arguments on Friday that the judge overseeing the probe has no authority to run such an investigation. The court also denies the judge improperly circumvented the clerks of court system by requiring that documents be sent to a post office box.

Last week, the Wall Street Journal reported that Governor Walker's campaign and over two dozen conservative groups have been subpoenaed by a special prosecutor looking for records and fundraising information tied to recall elections in 2011 and 2012.

It's unclear whether the special prosecutor, former assistant U.S. attorney Francis Schmitz, is also seeking the same kind of information and records from Democrats and their supporters.
