UNDATED (WSAU) The IRS is investigating former Packer LeRoy Butler's charitable foundation. He hasn't filed all of his paperwork concerning his fundraising activities. A Gannet newspaper report says Butler has a history of non-compliance with tax reporting rules. Butler did not mention the IRS investigation during more than two hours of interviews with the newspaper.
Butler collected personal appearance fees of up to $10,000 from the Leroy Butler Foundation. He's been unable to account for how some of the money was spent, and filed IRS forms only once in the last decade.
Butler raised money for breast cancer victims at dozens of events in recent years. For a time the Leroy Butler Foundation continued to raise money even though it wasn't attached to a charity. He had also used the foundation's web site and appearances to promote for-profit business ventures.
Butler made a Facebook posting yesterday that's he's fully cooperating with the IRS.
