WAUSAU, WI (WTAQ) - Nine years after a 16-year-old Wausau teen went missing, authorities say she has been found in Mexico and may return to Wisconsin by Christmas.
Connie McCallister, now 26, willingly left the country with her 22-year-old boyfriend on Aug. 15, 2004.
Authorities close to the case say a missionary in Mexico discovered she was the missing teen and contacted the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.
Wausau Police Captain Greg Hagenbucher says conversations on Skype confirmed she was McCallister, now a mother of three daughters.
Authorities learned that McCallister’s boyfriend took her and had “repeatedly drugged and beaten her”.
She was able to escape and changed her identity, eventually marrying another man who supports her decision to return to Wisconsin.
