Illinois is third Midwest state to have confirmed case of PEDV

CHICAGO (WTAQ) - Two of Wisconsin’s neighbors are the among the first U.S. states to have confirmed cases of a virus that affects farm pigs.

The USDA says Illinois has joined Iowa and Indiana on the list of states hit with porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, or PEDV.

John Clifford, the USDA’s chief veterinarian, says the disease can be devastating for individual pork producers – but he tells the Brownfield Ag News Service it’s not a threat to food safety.

The National Pork Board said PEDV does not spread to other animal species or humans.

Clifford says it’s not a disease in which quarantines should be ordered. He says states should not take action against the disease, and he hopes it does not hurt U.S. trade.

The virus exists in many parts of the world. As a result, experts do not believe American pork exports will be affected.

Clifford says only 1 to 3 percent of feeder pigs with PEDV die from the disease. In baby pigs, though, the death rates are much higher at 50 to 80 percent.
