SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - A Sheboygan Falls couple escaped their burning home on Thursday morning after being alerted by a patrolling Sheboygan Falls police officer. Chief Steve Riffel said Officer Jesse Smith spotted smoke coming from the home in the 700 block of Chicago Street about 8:30 this morning. By the time he got to the home another passerby was already knocking on the door. Riffel said there was already flame showing on the southeast corner of the home and heavy black smoke. Riffel said Smith alerted the woman of the house that the house was on fire and she said her husband was sleeping in a back bedroom. Smith alerted him and the couple was gotten out safely. Meanwhile, the Falls Fire Department with assistance from Kohler and the town of Falls brought the fire under control within 30 minutes, but not before it extensively damaged the home. Riffel said the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
