Ryan, Sensenbrenner don't agree on immigration bill

by

ROTHSCHILD, WI (WSAU) -  Not all Republicans agree on every issue. One of those issues is immigration reform. Congressman Jim Sensenbrenner is opposed to the so-called gang of eight bill, claiming it is amnesty that he cannot support.

Father Theodore Hesburgh‎ chaired a select committee in the 1980’s appointed by President Jimmy Carter. Sensenbrenner says that even the admitted liberal Father concluded you must enforce the border and enforce laws prohibiting employers from hiring illegal workers...and the gang of eight bill would repeat an amnesty mistake made by the 1986 Simpson-Mazzoli Act.  "The gang of eight Obama  immigration bill repeats that mistake, and it makes it worse.  It is the broadest amnesty that has ever been proposed in the Congress, and it must be rejected."

Congressman Paul Ryan says he and Sensenbrenner are good friends, but don’t agree on this issue. Ryan says the bill being drafted is not amnesty.  "The driving principle of immigration reform that's working its way through Congress is to number one, first secure the border.  Number two, make sure you have a verification system at the employer level so an undocumented immigrant can't get a job, and number three, do not reward a person for breaking or cutting in line."

Both Wisconsin Congressmen agree the border needs to be secured and employers need a verification system to keep them from hiring illegal workers.
