Brewers Sign Lohse

by

MILWAUKEE, WI (WHBL) - The Milwaukee Brewers’ newest starter says he’s ready to go. The Brewers signed veteran right-hander Kyle Lohse Monday to a three-year, 33-million-dollar contract that pays him an extra 350-thousand each season in which he throws 190 innings. General manager Doug Melvin says the 34 year old Lohse is coming off two outstanding years with division rival Saint Louis, and he knows how competitive the National League Central can be. Melvin also denied that Lohse’s signing was a panic move, as the younger pitchers at the bottom of the rotation have struggled at times this spring.  Lohse – a 12-year Major League veteran – says he’s been having his own spring training, and he’s been throwing up to 90 miles an hour against college hitters. He’ll throw a bullpen session today for pitching coach Rick Kranitz, and he could pitch in an exhibition game as early as Thursday. Lohse will start the regular season on Milwaukee’s active roster. He’s coming off his best season a year ago, going 16-3 with the Cardinals with a 2.86 E-R-A.  For his career, Lohse is 118-109 with a 4/45 E-R-A with Minnesota, Cincinnati, Philadelphia, and the Cardinals.  Under the contract offering rules, Saint Louis will get a supplemental draft pick in June – and the Brewers will lose their first-rounder, the 17th pick overall.
