The Marquette Golden Eagles worked hard to earn a share of the Big East Regular season title, a number three seed with a double bye in the conference tournament, and it went for naught with a quarterfinal loss to Notre Dame at Madison Square Garden Thursday night 73-65. The Golden Eagles raced out to a 17-4 lead, shot 60% from the floor in the first half but turned it over 11 times allowing the Irish to get back into the game. Marquette was forced to foul late the Notre Dame hit the throws to advance to the semifinals against Louisville. Georgetown will meet Syracuse in the other half of the draw. Jamil Wilson led Marquette with 16. The Golden Eagles finish 23-8 and should still get a favorable seed when the NCAA bids are announced Sunday.
