For the first time in 38 years, the WIAA girls state basketball tournament is not taking place in Madison. It moved to Green Bay's Resch Center and first impressions on Thursday was favorable among the players, coaches and fans. Over 8400 fans turned out for the two opening sessions, about 2200 more than showed up for the Thursday games last year at the Kohl Center. In the Division 5 semifinals, Wisconsin Rapids Assumption knocked of Wausau Newman Catholic 60-37. They will meet Barneveld in the title game. The Golden Eagles handed South Shore it's only loss of the year 54-45. In Division 4, Algoma routed Cuba City 62-39 behind 18 points from freshman Anna Dier. The Wolves will meet Colfax, a 42-41 winner over the The Prairie School. Semifinals in Divisions 1, 2 and 3 are on the schedule today.
