USDA suspends monthly reports on milk production

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - It might be awhile before we learn how hard Wisconsin’s dairy cows are working.

The USDA’s statistical agency has suspended some of its reports – including the monthly updates on milk production – because of the automatic federal spending cuts which took effect 12 days ago.

The suspensions will reportedly save the USDA about $6 million – but a lot of people in the industry will miss those reports, because they influence the supplies and prices of many items that end up on your dinner table.

Besides the milk production reports, the National Ag Statistics Service has called off its July count of cattle, which is used by the beef industry.

Reports on vegetables, fruit, rice, potatoes, and catfish are also suspended for now.

At last word, Wisconsin was the nation’s second-biggest milk producer, and it was slowly catching up to top producer California.

The Badger State is the Number One cheese maker, with a widening lead over second-place California.
