Nat'l Milk Producers Federation angry over USDA decision to drop monthly milk reports

MADISON, WI (WTAQ) - The National Milk Producers Federation takes issue with the USDA’s decision to drop its monthly milk production reports, saying it could cause havoc with milk prices.

The agency’s National Ag Statistics Service said it would suspend supply and production reports on at least 10 farm products, due to the automatic federal spending cuts which took effect March 1st.

The federation says the February milk production report will come out next Tuesday – and then the next six monthly milk reports will be suspended, along with a report on annual milk output due in April.

Chris Galen of the National Milk Producers said it’s a big deal because the reports are the only way the industry can gauge its supply, and figure out prices which are based on those estimates.

Galen says he’ll ask the government for the rationale in dropping the dairy figures.

The statistics service is not commenting.
