Klement's Racing Sausages turn 20, to be honored at Brewers game

MILWAUKEE, WI (WTAQ) - A Wisconsin institution turns 20 this year, Klement’s Famous Racing Sausages have been entertaining fans at Milwaukee Brewers’ games since 1993.

They’ll be honored in a ceremony at Miller Park Thursday afternoon, just before the Brewers play the Chicago Cubs.

The first sausages were cartoon characters who raced on an old black-and-white scoreboard at the former Milwaukee County Stadium.

In later years, characters in tall costumes held live races – and when Miller Park opened in 2001, the cartoon races were gone for good.

The Bratwurst, Italian, and Polish were the first sausages to compete.

The Hot Dog joined the group later in the ‘90’s, and the Chorizo was added in 2007.

Nobody knew how much of a treasure the sausages were until 2003, when Randall Simon of Pittsburgh created a national uproar by knocking down the Italian sausage as it was running past the Pittsburgh dugout.

In February, USA Today played the role of confidant when a thief anonymously explained how she and her boyfriend stole Klement’s costume of the Italian sausage from a fund-raising event in Germantown.

The thieves were later exposed and fined.
