SHEBOYGAN, WI (WHBL) - Opening statements were made in Sheboygan County Court Monday morning in the Nathan Paape trial.
A defense attorney told the jury that the 14-year-old Sheboygan teen never intended to kill 78-year-old Barbara Olsen. They said it was her great-grandson, 14-year-old Antonio Barbeau, that struck the victim several times with an ax at her Sheboygan Falls home last September. They added Barbeau asked Paape to help him out, and fearing for his safety he hit Olsen with a hammer.
Sheboygan County District Attorney Joe DeCecco said during his opening statement the two suspects are now pointing fingers at each other. He then began calling witnesses to the stand.
Barbeau has pleaded guilty to his murder charge and awaits sentencing in August. Paape’s trial, before Judge Timothy Van Akkeren, is scheduled to continue through Thursday.
