A banner season came to an end for the Sheboygan South Redwings girls soccer team. They shared the Fox River Classic Conference regular season title with De Pere and met the Redbirds again Thursday night in the Division 1 Sectional Semifinals. Sophomore Alek Kleis scored twice in the first 20 minutes giving the home team the lead but Rachel Van Sluys tallied for South in the 29th minute. Even though the Redwings controlled play in the second half, they couldn't find the equalizer and wound up falling 2-1. Head Coach Paul Rivas said the game was befitting the two best teams in the FRCC this year and despite the loss, the South program can now be considered one of the best in the area. Van Sluys was named the Classic Conference player of the year, Rivas was coach of the year and Redwings Mimi Pulido and Stacie Stone also landed on the all conference first team.
It will be an all CLC sectional final in Division 3 with the winner heading to state next week. Cedar Grove-Belgium will face Ozaukee after both teams won with thrilling shootouts Thursday night. The Rockets beat Oostburg 3-2 and Ozaukee got by Sturgeon Bay 2-1.
